![]() Once you decide on your content, you need to think about the site's framework. Information designers call this the site architecture. The best way to develop a framework is to create a flowchart. Use index cards, a large sheet of paper, or a white board. Organize your site with problem-solving in mind. Get your audience from Point A to Point B as quickly and easily as possible. The Web is hierarchical; you work from the top down. In supermarkets there are signs that lead you to the area with the products you want; you'd go to the dairy aisle to find cheese, for example. If every grocery item were arrayed in front of you as you walked into the store, you'd get confused. It works the same way on a web site. Don't overwhelm people by putting links to your entire site on the homepage. Instead, create a model to prioritize and categorize information. Define logical relationships between subjects and define links between information types. free web site, Web Site Design. chicago web development
Once you finish your flowchart, you can move on to design. Your design goal is to create a look and feel that permeates each screen. Consistency is important in all design but it's especially important with the Web. One mouse-click can take someone to a new site at any time so a consistent style provides a significant visual cue to let people know they are still at the same site. The illustration above shows the homepage -- or level one -- for Adobe's web site. Note how the red Adobe logo and company name are in the upper left-hand corner. Then note the two navigation bars at the top of the screen and the text-only navigation in the left column. Now go to the next screen to see what a second level of Adobe's web site looks like. chicago web development. Web Site Design
